About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted just a few months before the artist's death, the Self-Portrait constitutes Pierre Bonnard's pictorial testament, a major figure of French Post-Impressionism. Created in 1945 in his villa in Le Cannet, this self-portrait reveals a man in the twilight of his life, his gaze marked by serene gravity. The painter represents himself frontally, dressed in an ochre dressing gown and open collar, positioned before a window that opens onto a maritime landscape in turquoise and golden tones. This intimate staging echoes the domestic world that nourished his entire body of work.
The chromatic palette unfolds a symphony of warm colours—luminous yellows, orangey browns, deep ochres—subtly balanced by the blues and greens that enliven the background. Bonnard maintained his fascination for the interplay of light and coloured reflections that transform reality right to the end. The brushwork remains vibrant, fragmented, applied in small juxtaposed areas that make the pictorial surface shimmer. This technique, characteristic of the painter, creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere where the human figure seems to dissolve into the surrounding chromatic environment.
A former member of the Nabis alongside Vuillard and Denis, Bonnard developed over the decades a singular pictorial language, at the intersection of Impressionism and Fauvism. This final self-portrait bears witness to his loyalty to a subjective vision of representation, where colour takes precedence over drawing and emotion triumphs over anatomical accuracy. The face with simplified, almost ghostly features contrasts with the chromatic richness of the whole.
Housed in the Bemberg Foundation in Toulouse, this visual testament moves through its blend of physical fragility and intact pictorial vitality. Bonnard affirms one last time his conception of painting as a celebration of light and colour, bequeathing to posterity the image of a creator faithful until the very end to his enchanted vision of the world.
